People with cancer need to be touched. Bodyworkers should be at the forefront in embracing them and in teaching family and friends about the needs for touch. In the hands of touch therapists and bodyworkers is the potential to ease pain, nausea or fatigue, to rebuild hope, to provide a forum for expressing feelings, or to give a moment of relaxation. The simple act of attentive touch is good medicine for the multitude of physical and emotional discomforts that accompany cancer and treatment.
Gayle MacDonald, LMT is author of the book, Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People With Cancer. Since 1994, Gayle has worked with oncology patients at Oregon Health & Science University. She has also supervised and trained massage therapists and students on the oncology unit in chemo infusion, radiation oncology and the bone marrow transplant unit.
